The Holy Spirit is sometimes compared to a fire that comes upon people who are following God. Jesus promised that He would send the Holy Spirit upon the apostles when they waited in Jerusalem for the promised Holy Spirit. In Acts 2 the power of God decended in what appeared to be tongues of fire. The power enabled the men to speak in languages, understand the plan of God and preach the gospel and it gave them great courage to boldy speak about Jesus, the Messiah. Paul told Timothy to fan into flame the gift of God that he has received. We do not have the same gift that Timothy had, nor did we receive it in the same way (by the laying on of the elders' hands), but we must allow the Holy Spirit to burn in our lives.
