It must have been a shock to all the people who were gathered around John the Baptist, when John announced that the chosen one is "the lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." For so long they have been waiting for a conquering giant who would overthow their enemies and gain a powerful dynasty like they had in the days of King David and King Solomon.
