Stephen, one of the early servant-leaders in the church, did miracles and wonders in the city of Jerusalem. He has opportunity to preach about the salvation in Jesus Christ. When he was asked to defend his teaching, he did a survey of the Old Testament showing that leaders like Abraham, Joseph, Moses and David were not able to lead people to God's ultimate purpose and even when they spoke for God, they were rejected by their own people. The religious leaders of the New Testament were no different.  It is hard to see the truth when living in error is the only reality we know.
