To have leprosy in the early days was a horrific and debilitating death sentence. Lepers would live in isolated colonies in order to protect others from getting the disease. Living as a physical leper is similar to the spiritual disease that take over the soul resulting in numbness, pain, physical alienation and spiritual isolation.
