Being a faithful follower of Christ will result in trials and temptations that come because of our faith, morality, purity or testimony. We are reminded that our treasure is in heaven and will not necessarily be seen in this world. God is faithful and He will protect that which can never be taken away or diminished. Peter writes to the churches that are suffering in a similar way that the Hebrew author and James encourage struggling Christians to remain true to their Lord. We love the Lord and wait in expectation for His coming when we will be with Him forever.
