The people committed themselves to a permanant and exclusive relationship with the God of the covenant. Their pledge was written and signed by the leaders with the approval of all the people. It included their family relationships (especially marriage), worshipping the Lord and making the provision for the house of God, work habbits (especially the Sabbath rest), and giving their firstfruits to the Lord.  Sadly, this covenant, like many others, did not last very long before the old habbits and mindset returned and they sinned against the Lord.
